What Makes the Haynesville Shale Different
The Haynesville produces dry gas from roughly 10,500 to 13,500 feet at bottomhole temperatures above 300°F and pressure gradients that run far above normal. Everything about that is harder than a shallow oil well: the mud program, the casing design, the well control margin, the wear on equipment, and the consequences when something fails.
This is also the play closest to home for us. Our Tyler office is roughly an hour from Carthage and Henderson, and our Sulphur Springs office covers the northern edge of the region. That matters more than it sounds — East Texas juries in Panola, Harrison and Rusk counties are largely made up of people who have worked in or around this industry, and they have well-formed views about what a competent operation looks like.

How People Get Hurt in the Haynesville Shale
Well control events and blowouts
Overpressured, high-temperature gas leaves a narrow margin between mud weight and formation pressure. Kicks that are not detected and circulated out become blowouts, and blowouts in dry gas become fires. Mud logs, pit volume totalizer data and the driller's alarm history are central.
High-pressure surface equipment
BOP stack failures, choke manifold washouts and flowline ruptures during completion. Pressure-control equipment certification and testing records are frequently the difference between a defensible case and a strong one.
Gas processing, treating and cryogenic plants
Amine treating units, dehydration, and cryogenic processing carry chemical exposure, thermal burn and confined-space hazards distinct from wellsite work. These facilities are operated by midstream companies that are separate defendants entirely.
Compression and gathering infrastructure
The Haynesville moves enormous gas volumes through compressor stations to Gulf Coast LNG demand. Compressor blowdown ignition, hot surface contact and rotating equipment injuries are recurring.
NIOSH recorded 27 deaths — 5.7% of all U.S. oil and gas extraction worker deaths in the TX-LA-MS Salt basin between 2014 and 2019 — covering the Haynesville and East Texas salt basin. Nationally, roughly three quarters of those killed were contractors rather than operator employees.
Cross-border operators, East Texas courts
The Haynesville straddles the state line, and many of the operators, service companies and crews working the Texas side are based in Shreveport, Bossier City or elsewhere in North Louisiana. A worker who lives in Carthage may be employed by a Louisiana company, injured on a Texas lease, for an operator headquartered in Oklahoma. Which state's law applies to the contract, and where the case is filed, are questions with real dollar consequences.
Our position on that is straightforward. When a Texas resident is hurt on a Texas lease, the case belongs in a Texas court in front of an East Texas jury, and we resist removal and transfer efforts accordingly.

I live in Panola County but my employer is in Louisiana. Where would my case be filed?
Generally in Texas, in the county where the injury occurred or where a defendant does business. Out-of-state employers frequently try to move these cases or to argue Louisiana law applies through the service contract. Those arguments are resistible and we contest them early, because venue affects the outcome more than most clients expect.
What is a well control event and why does it matter to my case?
It means formation pressure got into the wellbore faster than the crew handled it. In a play as overpressured as the Haynesville, the question is almost never whether a kick occurred — it is whether the crew was trained to see it, staffed to respond, and equipped with pressure-control gear that had been tested. Those are all documented, and those documents are what we go after first.
I was hurt at a gas processing plant, not a well site. Is that still an oilfield case?
Yes, though the defendants and the applicable OSHA standards differ. Midstream and processing facilities are typically covered by process safety management requirements that create detailed, auditable duties. Those records are often more revealing than anything at a wellsite.
